Events

Arbor Day ceremonies have honored two (2) museum volunteers - Mrs. Martha B. Jones (1998) and Mrs. Eloyse Jones (2005). Both ladies were educators in the Elmore County School system and dedicated museum volunteers and supporters.

In 1989 the museum hosted civil rights activist Mrs. Virginia Durr who spoke on her book Inside the Magic Circle and discussed the work she and her husband did in the civil rights movement.

In 2000, the Thread My Needle Quilting Group began meeting at the museum as a means of having the building open at least once a week. The ladies meet every Tuesday which provides an opportunity for senior citizens and others to  utilize their skills, share valuable community history and fellowship with others. The group receives the Idella Childs Distinguished Service Award for the preservation of a significant African American folk art tradition. The award was presented by the Black Heritage Council, an advisory council to the Alabama Historical Commission.
